Morning Antics

Stuck in the tree

Stuck in the tree

The kids were outside watching the construction (of course) while I ran in to wash my hands. I came back out and Megan was stuck in the tree. She was mad that I went back in and got my camera and this picture was a sneak attack. I told her that I had already put it away when she looked in my direction while I snapped the photo. That kid can really hold a grudge. Jake, on the other hand, just continued to talk the entire time -- and he doesn't hold a grudge at all!

Construction!

Construction!

Our next door neighbors have started a renovation project and Jake could not be happier. He spent the afternoon watching the concrete crew pour the new foundation for the addition and made some friends with the guys. Now, the concrete guys speak Spanish and Jake speaks toddler, but somehow it works for them. Jake is at a point where he talks continuously. Seriously. He does not stop. He spent some time talking with the guys at the fence and it was pretty funny. I wasn't close enough to hear the actual conversation but there seemed to be a bit of banter between them. When the second concrete mixer showed up, Jake's Spanish speaking friends invited him over to take a picture. That's when he suddenly got shy and this picture is about as close as I could get him to go. Such fun (especially since it's someone else's construction mess!!!).

Happy Birthday, Mimi!!

Megan did the rest - spending most of her time on the sprinkles to make sure there was enough on each one.

Unfortunately for Michele, the kids were a bit tired this afternoon and were acting a bit crazy. They were decent for the majority of the visit, but by the end, they had each had a time out and plenty of reprimands on top of it. Soon the weather will be warm enough to burn off this energy OUTSIDE!!!

Princess & the Pea

Princess & the Pea

Megan didn't have school today, so we went to see the play "The Princess and the Pea". It was a production by Chicago Kids Company and fortunately for us, a gal in my golf league is the owner! So, we got the "royal" treatment with a backstage tour and pictures with the cast. The kids had a great time (and I enjoyed it too)!

Everyday Stuff

This photo was a "forced" together shot. I said, "C'mon, take a picture together". This was the best smile I could get out of them. Then, they started conspiring against me and I got this shot, which I love:

Lately, Jake's favorite phrases have been, "Shut up" and "You're so stupid". Anytime he gets mad or frustrated (no matter the cause), those are the phrases that come out of his mouth. It's actually pretty funny sometimes because we know he can't think of anything else to say. Then there are times when he thinks it's funny too. For instance, on Christmas day, my brother Brian was leaving and Jake was standing at the door and shouted out to him, "Merry Chistmas Uncle Brian......You're so stupid".

The other thing that Jake did for a while, was make up nonsense talk. He would just ramble on with various phrases and after a while the one that prevailed was "Bucko Cheesy". I know this means nothing to any of you reading this, but I had to include it for our own reference. He and Darin go back in forth with "Hi Bucko Cheesy"...."No, you're bucko cheesy". I think Jake considers it an insult, but it's their little inside joke.

Megan was going to bed one night and told me, "I want to be the smartest person in the world."

I let them use plastic knives to play with their play-doh. Megan calls it a cutter and Jake calls it a "sharp". As in, "Can you hand me the cutter?" And, "I want a sharp".

Megan and Jake like to run around and do "tricks". Megan will show off a move and say, "Ta Da". Jake's version of that is "Ta Ha". No matter how many times we tell him the correct version, he always reverts back to "Ta Ha".

During Catholic Schools Week, Megan's preschool had some fun activities going on. One day, she came home with the game, Don't Break the Ice. I asked her where she got it from and she answered, "From the Ruffle Game". I had no idea what she was talking about until about a week later when I was talking about a raffle for some reason. She said, "You were playing a ruffle game too?" That was my "Ah ha" moment.

Darin was doing some work around the house and the kids were helping. Jake kept asking for a "Goofdriver". Yep, you guessed it - screwdriver.

We get a laugh out of how Jake says, "Spongebob Squarepants". His version sounds more like "Fuh-budge carepants". We ask him over and over to say it and laugh every time.

Sometimes I call Jake "Sweetie Pie". He says, "I not your fweetie pie. Daddy your fweetie pie". Although he's still pretty sweet because every now and then he'll come up to me and say, "I make you smile, mom?" And I say, "sure" and then he gives me a big kiss.

When Darin leaves for work in the morning, Jake has to be sure to give him a big hug and kiss. He's also watches out for his sister. He directs Darin by saying (actually it's more like screaming), "Hug and kiss Megan, dad!" And he doesn't give in until everyone has had sufficient hugs and kisses. So sweet.

That's all for now.

The artist and the attention grabber

Painting
Originally uploaded by tracyg00
As you can see from this photo, Megan is very focused on whatever her particular project is. Jake is always happy to look away from his work of art to ham it up for the camera. This is very reflective of their personalities. Last Wednesday, I was trying to find some activities to keep them busy (and from beating on each other), so we decided to paint. When we were taking out the supplies from the art closet, Megan found a little packet of note cards. Later that evening, Jimmy and I were sitting here with the kids (Darin was in Phoenix) and Megan announced, "I want to write a card" after seeing the cards still sitting there. I asked her who she'd like to send a card to and she said, "Auntie Judy". Then, she proceeded to recite exactly how she wanted the card to read. Jimmy wrote out the words for her and she copied it onto her note card. Here is the finished work:

She had to take a couple of breaks since her hand was getting tired. She looked at it and said, "That's a really long word". We were like, "No, you just didn't leave any spaces".

We had to get all of the paint off of Jake, so he took a bath in the sink and couldn't have been happier.

Finally, today, Jake decided that diapers are for babies. He's been wearing his big boy pants and is quite proud. He sported a diaper while we went out for a while today (I'm not that brave). Then, as soon as we got home, he asked, "Where are my big boy pants?" Nice!
